Tredegar’s return to the Stroud Brass Band Festival concert series proved to be an enjoyable occasion for all concerned. The band performed well much to the delight of a knowledgeable and appreciative audience at the Subscription Rooms. Ian Porthouse’s choice of programme met with great approval by all concerned. The band enjoyed the evening as much as the audience, demonstrating that the new partnership has made good progress with much promise for the future.
The band’s soloists all had an evening to remember. Principal cornet, Dewi Griffith’s virtuoso rendering of The Paragon was met with tumultuous applause. Not to be outdone Steve Barnsley, Soprano, produced a faultless performance of On with the Motley. Andrea Lewis, flugel, the only female soloist of the evening rose to the occasion with a moving rendition of Share my Yoke. Finally by the time Darren Morris’s heartfelt performance of Be My Love was heard there was barely a dry eye in the house.
However, one soloist deserves a special mention. Solo horn, Chris Davies, a music student at Oxford University, impressed all present with a ‘world premiere’ performance of his own composition, Skies.
The evening showed that Tredegar are in good form for their next engagement, the Yeovil Entertainment Contest.
