Comments:
1. Massive dynamic range shown through introduction - very impressive
2. Mozart’s theme is serene and very well balanced, a fantastic contrast. The tutti before Var. 1 is so well rounded. Var. 2 some wonderful, virtuosic playing on show. Var. 3 just doesn’t quite get in tune at ’pp’ at extreme ranges. Good sop eventually at [G]. Var. 4 horn and flugel are super. Var. 5 good risks taken, most come off. Var. 6 just takes my breath away! Var. 7 Eb bass C’s are out of tune at [M] but the playing is of a very high quality. Var. 9 again an awesome contrast - so exciting.
3. Good effects here. [Q] chord not in tune (3rd bar fine). Troms then not entirely in tune - good eventually though. In fact tuning continues to grate into [R]. Super cornet at [R].
‘Notturno’ very refined and some more high quality solo playing. Euph duet has 2nd player over balancing I fell. Great effects to end though!
4. WOW - what a start! And all fugue entries are clear - its thrilling! At [AA], 1st Euph overpowers the whole band believe it or not! Some enormous sounds to end - its all very impressive.
A wonderful performance, full of nuance, drama and contrast. Not perfect on intonation though, but the big picture was magnificent!
